The Arapahoe School 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) is designed to expand projects that benefit the youth and their families in the Arapahoe community. The project provides a safe, drug-free supervised after school, weekend, and summer program via a Community Learning Center. The project was designed to serve approximately 360 students in grades K-8 and their families, 200 high school students and/or high school dropouts, approximately 150 young adults (19-26) and the elders of the community. The21st Century Community Learning Center Project has four major components (centered around the domains of the individual student and the extended family/community) which serve as the guidelines for the implementation of the project. The four components include: 1. Services to assist students to meet or exceed State and local standards in core academic subjects, including reading, writing, math, and science, using a variety of means, including after-school tutoring, Saturday School, Friday afternoon enrichment classes, and summer school. 2. Increase self esteem and reduce anti-social behavior and dropping out of school by creating clubs and enrichment activities (recreational, learning, and field trips) that provide incentives for safe, healthy, and drug-free social activities and academic achievement. 3. Improve the school/family and school/community relationships by providing a number of activities to include technology education programs for individuals of all ages, intergenerational recreational/learning activities, and family/child programs. 4. Improve the access to resources and training that can effectively educate community and family members and provide services to the young adults in the community, including library resources, and GED training. Program activities include cultural and recreational activities, computer classes for adults, library nights, after school tutoring, calligraphy, performance kite flying, art classes, swimming, traditional horsemanship clinic, back-to-school celebration, board games, taekwando, boy scouts and girl scouts.
